§ 11. Ceremonial Hymn

“Incidentally, I’d like to ask you something,” I said to the bishop gazing at Eldmed and Naya with his mouth open. “What do I need to do to meet the pope of Jiordal?”

However, the bishop passed in front of me as if he hadn’t heard. He kneeled before Naya and Eldmed and started praying.. “O great Heavenly Father and the holy saint chosen to form a pact with him, I offer my deepest gratitude to the heavens for this encounter. Will you have the mercy to lend an ear to the woes of this pitiful but devout follower?”

Naya looked over at Eldmed worriedly. He replied in his usual tone. “Hey now, don’t get the wrong idea. We’re not the ones to be lowering your head to.”

The bishop stared at the Conflagration King in shock.

“Our ruler is the Demon King over there. I am just one demon who serves him. Is it the etiquette of this place to ignore one’s master and bow to their subordinate? Hm?”

“But gods are superior existences that stand above kings,” the bishop argued, clearly confused. “If he is the king as you claim, then his royal authority must have been granted by you. As a follower, I believed it was my duty to first express my respect to the god and the young lady who has exchanged a pact with them.”

“Bwa ha ha! Then you’d better remember this: the Demon King stands above all gods. In the first place, the Heavenly Father’s order was stolen from Nosgalia by the Demon King Anos Voldigoad over there. He was the one who granted the order to me.”

“Oh!” The bishop turned to me with a look of reverence. “He who stands above the gods, granting them and depriving them of power... Is that not the very power of the Almighty Radiance?” He walked in front of me and fell to his knees, clutching his hands in prayer. “In my ignorance, I failed to see the truth. Thus, I will believe the words of a god. He who stands above the gods, Demon King Anos Voldigoad, please forgive me for my belated introduction. I am Mirano Em Sisarad, bishop of Jiordal. Please forgive me for my earlier impoliteness.”

“You are forgiven. You may also stand at ease, for I am not Equis. I am merely a demon from the world above ground, unworthy of your worship. “

Mirano nodded quietly. “I understand. However, even if you are not the Almighty Radiance, you still stand above the gods. I cannot doubt the words of a god.”

“Then do as you wish.”

“Demon King Anos, for you, I will arrange an audience with the pope of Jiordal. I am sure His Holiness will readily accept when he hears that you can control the gods without a pledge jewel. However, before I do so, I ask that you lend your ears to the words of this pitiful follower.”

“Speak freely.”

The bishop started praying while speaking. “In this pious nation of Jiordal, we worship the gods, revere gods, and offer our songs to them, yet there is a fool among us who has fallen to heresy.
